for the benefit of Mr. Hoffman

empty men in crowded rooms
you walk out
those who notice, left now
stuck between the work and the gloom

too many of my heroes
chased too soon
a victim of their own presence
at least I presume

a warm winter day
the sunlight stretching
Mr Hoffman has died
I read it in the news

just a subtle reminder
that someone once said I looked like you
when I had hair
before the white horse got to you

all those forgotten speeches
and throw away lines
all those lesser parts
now seem so dignified because of you

goodnight, Mr. Hoffman

for Miles

a thousand years have come and gone before you came
many have loved but more have loved in vein
I was alive I guess but they were only days
now I feel each and every breath I take

just to see the innocence before it leaves your eyes
I could tell you all I know but those truths are mine
you’ll have to see it for yourself and that takes time

too many tears have come and gone
the world bears witness yet walks on
not everything happens the way you think it should
some pray to jesus but daddy sings songs

just to see the innocence before it leaves your eyes
I could tell you all I know but those truths are mine
you’ll have to see it for yourself and that takes time

there’s happiness there to be found
don’t forget the shadows that run across the ground
it’s always the little things that will get you down
don’t be afraid to forgive or fall in love again

just to see the innocence before it leaves your eyes
I could tell you all I know but those truths are mine
you’ll have to see it for yourself and that takes time

a figure void of recognition calls

speaks of dark & light

while vessels break lose out of her veins

she said there is no reason

to be afraid

the room gets heavier

posters litter the wall

this is my room as a child

my hollow heroes on display

suddenly im back

a man lost in reverie

surrounded by facts

and all that makes me human

are what Im looking atĀ

canals

all your conclusions drawn

like the stranger in the doorway

whose past is all but gone

you struggle to explain

the freedom in the pain

so you smile and look away

your love was a means to an end

if I somehow disappointed you

then I guess Im making sense

if you find yourself some morning

not knowing how you arrived

just close your eyes and take it in

the canals of your memories

are just holding water

and that love will never be born

tourists walk though the chambers

of a heart you stopped loving

and only then do you want it back

dark scenes

behind bright eyes
you falter
to be all the things
you taught him
you feel
that it only gets harder

boys werent ever suppose to be men
but its your pride that wont let you give in
you can break a man and never know it
he can love you more than life but he fails to show it

to be forgotten by yourself
to be rotten by the world and her cold arms
a status update meant for no one else

boys are taught not to cry
but what hollow strength we commend
for the sake of such cold men
a heart can only break so many times before it gives in
then we are told to love

but what kind of men do they request?
the kind that seem ancient and unmoving
the city moves around me
I only want him to be who he finds himself to be
because between the laughter
he will be the one that walks through his dark scenes

2:24(it’s not about you)

were you disappointed or surprised you were in my dreams?
probably neither since I never fall asleep
tempted like the rest but a jester in your court I can see
what I can remember is not what use to be
these things chase us down like criminals
not of blue or white fashion but the kind that make men weak

I can’t be a hollow man in your hall of fallen takers
I won’t be one of your friends who to those still remains nameless
as interesting as a crossword puzzle decoded
the words I have for you too simple, too loaded
like the man who gave me a name at the end of the bar
I am how you remember me

in some song we are still dancing
in your eyes I’m still saying goodbye
if love could do us any justice
it would just give us time
